ARTIST/BAND /GROUP INFORMATION

Born In/Current Location : Port Au Prince, Haiti
Occupation(s) : Group
Genres : Rara Voodoo Rhythms

ADJABEL is a dancing group that fuses Haitian Rara and Voodoo rhythms with song, rock, jazz, ballads. We knew Adjabel as a duo, the group changed its formation for a world quartet, dancing that fuses rhythms Rara and Haitian Vodou with song, rock, jazz, ballads… Atissou Loko offers this music called Racine from the Sanba school in Port-Au-Prince which offers multiple perspectives on the basis of drums composed of hundreds of rhythms traditional. These allow marriages with current or ancient music.

The Adjabel sound carries a whole story: that of the return of Atissou Loko, alias Cyril Forman to his Caribbean roots. It is in the plain of Gonaïves, Mecca of the War of Independence, that the true roots of Haiti remain, those of slaves from Africa: from generation to generation, the priests have perpetuated a voodoo there. pure born in West Africa. By rediscovering his roots in the captivating force of voodoo drums, Cyril molts and becomes Atissou Loko (“the son of Papa Loko”, the deity of air and earth). Atissou Loko, or the exporter of the sound of Haiti mixed with other influences and claiming its multi-culture.

Adjabel did not have one at its beginnings: already Four albums in the assets of the formation. “Tanbou Base Music” (self-produced – 2000), “Akoustik Resolution” (Pure Song – 2001) and “Origins” (Créon Music / EMI – 2004), offer a most exotic musical journey where traditional music mixes with reggae tones, blues, rap, groove… We find there the old voice of Adjabel, Mariame Kadi, as well as the paw of musicians such as the ex-keyboard of Salif Keita, Jean-Philippe Rykiel, the bassist David Jacob, or the drummer Julien Tékéyan.

In 2008, Racine 4: Caribbean Journey “(Iris / Harmonia Mundi), followed on from the first three albums while bringing a different texture, compositions that gave pride of place to dance and trance. With arrangements by Gillian Mombo and Atissou Loko as well as numerous participations, Root 4 is a tribute to the diversity of the Caribbean:

With Ralph Thamar (Malavoi), Jean-Claude Naimro (Kassav ‘), BélO (RFI Discovery Prize 2006 ), Ifé (Traditional singer), Scott Taylor (Têtes Raides accordion), Lou Valentino (Bermuda), Mimi Barthélémy (Haitian storyteller), Mzelle Sheena (Rapper), Seyve (Soul singer), Jean-Michel Martial (Comedian) .. A fifth album is in preparation. Adjabel (the contraction of Adja, Beninese land and Label, Haitian goddess of love) symbolizes in a certain way the meeting between earth and sky, Africa, Europe and America. In a few hundred concerts including notable first parts (Mano Solo, Ekova, Keziah Jones, Java) the group has proven, in addition to its undeniable musical quality, its desire for communion between styles, sounds, peoples. The proof in music.
