Brothers Posse

ARTIST/BAND /GROUP INFORMATION

Born In/Current Location : Haiti

In 1994, four young singers linked by an indestructible friendship decided to form a rap group to escape the cleavage between the two main musical trends in Haiti: the konpa, urban dance music, ancestor of the zouk, and the rasin music that fuses rhythms traditional voodoo, rock and reggae. At first, the lyrics are in English in the avowed hope of reaching an international audience. The success was immediate, especially with young people eager to open up to foreign fashions. The band therefore evolves quickly and rap quickly gives way to music oscillating between roots, rock and reggae, imprinted with traditional rhythms, especially the rara rhythms of the rural Carnival.

In the spirit of this musical shift and in order to distinguish herself, she finally abandoned English for Creole, thus creating a truly Haitian version of current music. If the words sometimes only evoke simple episodes of everyday life, they most often reveal their great attachment to the cause of non-violence. It is therefore not surprising that the group is actively engaged in the disarmament campaign aimed at re-establishing a climate of trust and dialogue in Haiti. Moreover, Antonio Cheramy (alias Don Kato, the leader of the posse) is also at the origin of the Movement of Artists for Peace, which organizes peaceful concerts in popular neighborhoods. Beyond this commitment, Brothers Posse offers us above all a new and unique sound: that of Haitian music today … and probably tomorrow.
