Michel, Ejay

ARTIST/BAND /GROUP INFORMATION

Ejay Michel has been getting a lot of recognition lately with his music and has created a lot of buzz in the HMI due to his hit single “OU FEM DEKONTROLE”, which came out December 2013. Born and raised in Haiti, Ejay Michel grew up in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, where he completed his elementary and secondary studies, before him and his family traveled to the US where he now resides.

From a very young age, while in school, he had a lot of different hobbies; including running tracks, playing basketball(played high school basketball at St-Louis de Gonzague). He was also an excellent dancer of urban music and performed at a very high level in that discipline. And while doing everything else, Ejay Michel was always very musically inclined. He listened to all kinds of music. If there was a sound with a bass line in there, it would catch his attention. He wrote his first song at the age of 15. He once participated in a yearly Christmas song competition which was presented by a very well known TV station in his hometown (Telemax: konkou chante nwèl). The competition was broadcasted live on national TV and he came out as a semi-finalist in that year.

Very often he would attend rehearsals of many different local bands which he would consider a learning experience for himself.
Until recently, Ejay Michel never published any of his original songs. After relocating to the US with his family, he started taking music lessons(guitar, bass and vocals) while attending college to continue his studies. He now works as a healthcare professional.

When it comes to his music, Ejay Michel is very versatile. He’s into a wide variety of music genres and it shows because so far all of his creations are all very different from each other. He has a very modern sound with subtle use of vocal harmony and lots of repetitive melodic phrasing. He enjoys up-tempo songs, (happy songs as he usually calls them). Although he’s written a few emotional texts, he doesn’t really like the idea of a sad song. He always says that music shouldn’t be hard to do, “a beat, a melodie and smile, that’s all you need.” And that’s how he describes music.
