Imagine overcoming Haiti’s toughest challenges, graduating high school amid instability, building a following online, and dreaming of a future full of possibilities, only to have your life violently cut short. This is the heartbreaking reality of 19-year-old Zamy Wanderson, better known as @yo.boy.wander on TikTok.
Zamy was full of promise. His TikTok profile showed a laid-back young man who cherished time with friends and placed immense value on education. A recent graduate of Collège Canado-Haïtien, he had just completed high school. No one knows for sure what path he would have chosen next, but his life held open doors and the hope of opportunities ahead.
On Monday, August 18, 2025, as teachers protested outside the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training in Delmas 83, Zamy was caught in the chaos. According to reports, security forces attempted to disperse the crowd when gunfire broke out. A stray bullet struck Zamy in the stomach. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically died before he could be admitted.
The Haitian Basketball Federation, which knew him as a prospect and member of the 56th Canado class, expressed devastation over his death and offered condolences to his family, teammates, friends, and the wider basketball community. His passing highlights a painful truth in Haiti, where young people with bright futures continue to fall victim to senseless violence.
Zamy Wanderson symbolized what Haiti stands to lose when its youth are cut down before their lives truly begin. He was not a protester, but a student and a creator with a world of potential ahead of him. His death is a devastating reminder of how fragile hope is in a country where stray bullets claim too many innocent lives, leaving behind unanswered questions and families who will never know what their children might have become.
Resan Diplome Lekòl Segondè ak TikTokè, Zamy Wanderson, Mouri nan Dèlma Akoz Yon Bal Pèdi
Imajine ou pase pi gwo defi Ayiti yo, fini lekòl segondè nan mitan enstabilite, bati yon fanbase sou entènèt, epi reve ak yon avni ki chaje ak posiblite, pou lavi ou koupe vyolanman twò bonè.
Lendi 18 out 2025, pandan pwofesè t ap manifeste devan Ministè Edikasyon Nasyonal ak Fòmasyon Pwofesyonèl nan Dèlma 83, Zamy te pran nan dezòd la. Dapre rapò yo, fòs sekirite yo te eseye gaye foul la lè kout bal pete. Yon bal pèdi frape Zamy nan vant.
